RD Burman in rap song
by Narendra Kusnur (Mid-day)
Music director R D Burman’s songs may have been remixed in large numbers in India, but now, his music has even found a place in American rap.
What’s Happenin’, a song by hip-hop stars Method Man and Busta Rhymes, contains a long sample from the Hare Rama Hare Krishna hit Dum Maro Dum.
Unlike the Kaliyon Ka Chaman case, however, all the right permissions have been taken and credits given this time. In fact, the song’s composing credits are given to ‘C Smith/ T Smith/ H Jordan/ A Bakshi/ RD Burman’, and the publishing rights given to Saregama India.
