Melody in the movies: 1977 (continued)

Rajiv Vijaykar (Screen)

The standout composition in Hum Kisise Kum Naheen is not 'Kya hua tera waada...', but Rafi-Asha's title-track, a magnificent qawwali that has few, if any equals, in modern film music. In an on-screen musical competition, four tracks, 'Chand mera dil...' (another chartbuster), 'Aa dil kya mehfil hai tere qadmon mein...', 'Tum kya jaano...' and 'Mil gaya humko saathi mil gaya...' (inspired from an Abba hit) come in sequence. The other hits are 'Yeh ladka haye Allah...', 'Humko to yaara teri yaari...' and 'Bachna ae haseenon...' Eighteen years later, the last song will inspire Jatin-Lalit to come up with 'Ruk jaa o dil deewane...' for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge!

RD Burman's Bullet is marked by the Lata gem 'Jab tum chale jaaoge...' and Kishore-Asha's 'Chori chori chupke chupke tere mere sang...'. Mukesh sings 'Lalla lalla lori doodh ki katori...' and 'Suhani chandni raatein...' in Mukti, and Rafi's superb 'Pyaar hai ek nishaan qadmon ka..' is sidelined in the process. Karm's 'Samay tu dheere dheere chal...' is somewhat popular. Kinara has 'Naam gum jayega...', 'Ab ke na saawan barse...' and 'Meethe bol bole bole payaliya...'. Bundalbaaz has 'Naghma hamara gaayega...', while Chandi Sona has the fleetingly popular 'Aap sa koi haseen...'. Though RD's Darling Darling is never released due to legal wrangles, two songs, 'Hello darling...' and 'Aise na mujhe tum dekho...' catch attention.

RD Burman scores a major humdinger in Hum Kisise Kum Nahi with an all-hit nine-track score that, among others, gets Mohd. Rafi his first National award for 'Kya hua tera waada...', a track hummed even today.

Melody in the movies: 1976

Rajiv Vijaykar (Screen)

Rahul Dev Burman scores a triumph with Mehbooba that boasts of evergreen hits like the melodious 'Mere naina saawan bhadon...' (the Kishore Kumar version overshadowing Lata's version), 'Parbat ke peeche...', 'Main tawaif hoon mujra karoongi...' and the folk exotica 'Chalo ri chalo ri...'

Maha Chor has 'Hindu hoon main na Mussalmaan hoon...' and 'Main tumse pyar karti hoon...', the only popular song Lata has sung for Neetu Singh under RD Burman's baton. Anand Bakshi sings his only duet with Asha –'Sun Banto baat meri...'. He also sings 'Jagat musafirkhana...' in Balika Badhu, which is noted, apart from the Amit Kumar hit, 'Bade achche lagne lage...' , for the fleetingly popular Rafi number, 'Yeh chudiyaan nahin hathkadiyaan hai...'.

Khalifa is remembered for 'Tak dhin tak...', a fun duet by Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey, and 'Dil machal rahaa hai...' (Kishore-Asha). Kishore adds to his kitty two more popular duets, 'Rang le aayenge...' (with Asha) and 'Aankhen milayenge...' (with Lata) from Bhanwar.
