music industry's culture in Pancham's previous generation.

In fact, Pancham continued with the same spirit with his contemporaries
(Laxmi-Pyare, K ji-A ji). Seems a much different scene today.

Asha talks about one of the 'difficult' songs that Pancham gave her to sing. The song is "daiyaa ye mai.n kahaa.N aa pha.Nsii" from 'Caravan'. Pancham tells how Nasir Hussain used to work on songs.

Meree Sangeet Yaatra - R D Burman - 16: Episode 9, Part 1

Resuming the series after a short, unplanned break. Though as much I fear that the absence might not have even been noticed, I will yet try to continue posting the remaining parts of the series, at regular frequency.

Today's part is about a lovely, exuberant, fresh and highly unusual (in terms of execution, and without much ado about it) song from Ijaazat - baarisho.n ke paanii se. One interesting thing that is discussed in this episode is the way, as Gulzar describes, a song's music creation process gives picturisation ideas to the director. On second thoughts, it might well have been an exclusive Gulzar-Pancham case.

The song in question, however, would present, even to a visually challenged a very descriptive imagery of a rain-soaked valley - just the music of it. Of course, those who have seen it on screen would find themselves inside the valley, even before the prelude is finished.

In this part they talk about another gem that came out of the RD-Gulzar factory - 'raina beetee jaaye'. RD makes an interesting point regarding the use of raag-based songs in filmi situations. One can also see that RDs process of song-making was not entirely devoid of considerations for aspects of classical music. So next time if you
find a trace of a raag in an RDB song, don't just pass it as a chance. He really meant it. He knew his raags better than he made us believe he knew.

From Pancham Group: Meree Sangeet Yaatra - Rahul Dev Burman - 1

Here's something which has been a source of great insight for me into Pancham, both as a human being and a music composer. It has also answered me a lot of questions, not only related to Pancham, Gulzar and Asha and many of their songs but some others as well.

As you might know 'Meree Sangeet Yaatra' was a radio series (part of their regular programme 'Sangeet Sarita'), and was broadcasted on Vividh Bharati sometime in late 80s (After release of Dil Padosi
Hai). It was then re-aired in Feb 1994, after RD's demise. And now there's a talk of another re-broadcast of the series. Just make sure you don't miss it, if it happens.

I have the entire recording with me (as may be many others) and plan to share it with you in a different format, that is through text transliteration. Of course, this is nowhere near the same as listening the voices of the trio with all the nuances and emphasises
and chuckles.. but I have tried my best to reproduce it at least verbatim. I will be doing one song at a time. A typical episode had two songs. The series consisted of 15 such episodes. And we are starting
from the very beginning. This episode is produced in full..
